Custom tempo setting per exercise
Hinrich Nagel
When I set a tempo to a beat-template (single measure worksheet), this tempo is applied (and stored) for all exercises of this worksheet. But as a drum-beginner like me, there are some exercises which are more difficult to play then another. In practice, I‘m always have to reset the tempo for a specific exercise.
Maybe it is possible to store the tempo for each exercise separately?

Thanks for this request, Hinrich Nagel!
This feedback is very insightful. I can absolutely understand how certain exercises would be played at specific tempos. 👍🏻 That said, it's not clear to me yet how this might be able to be accomplished. 🤔
When practicing an entire beat, or an entire worksheet, the tempo is applied to the entire beat as you indicated. I'm unsure how it would be possible to apply the tempo to only a single exercise in the beat, especially if exercises are played back-to-back.
I suppose this leads me to the questions:
- When you are practicing exercises in a single-measure worksheet, how do you practice them? Do you play each one at a time? Do you play several back-to-back?
- I have considered implementing features such as automatic tempo increase, where after playing through a worksheet (repeating each measure for a set # of times), the tempo could increase by some amount as defined by you, and then repeat from the top. This kind of feature would not be very compatible with this request.
As I believe you are familiar with now, one of my primary goals with Beat Note is to ensure that it is
intuitive and easy to use
. So far I can see two primary challenges with this request:#1. How could you as the user intuitively set or configure your desired tempo when composing the beat (while editing)? Is this a specific tempo (e.g. 80bpm)? Or a tempo range (from 60-90bpm)?
#2. How would the app allow you to leverage these tempo settings during your practice session when:
a) practicing the entire worksheet from the top to the bottom (play all exercises from 1 to 12)?
b) when you've isolated a single exercise to focus on practicing (play only exercise #3)?
c) in the future, when you've isolated multiple exercises to practice (for example a range such as from exercise #5 to exercise #8, or a subset or selection of non-consecutive exercises, such as 3, 5, 7, 10)?
If you (and other users) could consider these questions and share your thoughts, that would help me to brainstorm potential solutions.
Thanks!

Derek LeeLet me explain my personal use-case for the single-measure worksheet. I choose the single-measure worksheet (and maybe in the future double-measure worksheet) whenever I like to compose several exercises of a specific topic (like rudiments, triplets, bass-drum exercises etc.) When I practice the exercises later on I start with #1 at a moderate tempo, and depending on the „quality“ of my playing I increase or decrease the tempo. Afterwards I go to exercise #2 and so on.
So, from perspective the setting of tempo should be like the existing setting of looping: Here I can choose ‚repeat all‘ or ‚Each exercise‘. Maybe for the tempo the naming could be ‚current exercise‘ or ‚All exercises‘. The setting could eventually easier for a specific exercise if there was the possibility to ‚swipe left‘ to next exercise (while displaying a specific exercise; ‚swipe right‘ is already implemented and returns to exercise overview).
Another question is how the tempo-setting for an exercise (or all exercises) is documented; may be you can add the ‚normal‘ (standardized?) sign (see attachment) above the stave.
Hopefully my explanations are not too confused.

Hinrich Nagel Thanks for the additional details! This is really helpful. 🙌🏻
Re: Swiping - there is an existing enhancement request for this that looks like it has your vote already: https://roadmap.beat-note.app/feature-requests/p/swipe-on-worksheets
Re: Documenting tempos for exercises: I like the idea you've proposed of adding the tempo marker. 👍🏻
Re: How to set tempo for entire beat -vs- each exercise: That makes sense! As you indicated, the looping currently segments based on this, so it would be intuitive to use a similar approach. 👏🏻 Also, when on the focused practice screen (only the current exercise), then the tempo would know which exercise to manage the tempo for.
I'm interested to see what other users think about this as well. Adding these additional options does increase the complexity of the interface, but I think an intuitive design and repetitive design approach would help to alleviate this.
Thanks for your helpful feedback and ideation on this, Hinrich! 🙇🏻♂️
Hinrich Nagel
Derek Lee I‘m looking forward to your further development.

Hinrich Nagel Hi Hinrich! I had some inspiration for this concept that I wanted to share with you. Would you be willing to jump on a call sometime for us to discuss? 🤔 Thank you!
Hinrich Nagel
Derek Lee I feel very honored that you like to discuss with me on a call, and yes of course I‘m willing to do so. But be aware (as I mentioned before) English is not my native language😇.
What is your preferred date/time for the call? Maybe it is possible for you to have a FaceTime-Video call?
