Export to MIDI

Hi, this is my most wanted feature. I want to use my beats without transcribing it into midi manually. Absolut must in my view.
Derek Lee
notebynote Welcome to the community! Thank you for your feedback and for contributing to the product roadmap. I consider this feature a "must have" as well and intend to implement it in the future, it's just a matter of when. 👍🏻
I use the popularity of requests as part of my formula to decide when a feature is implemented, and this is guided by everyone's votes. I'll add your vote to this feature since you left this comment and please be sure to cast your vote on other features that are important to you by tapping on the carat / up arrow (^) to ensure your vote is considered.
It would also be helpful to know how you expect the exported MIDI to function, as Beat Note offers more instruments and articulations than are supported in the standard MIDI percussion array. Would you be willing to jump on a call sometime to discuss your needs?
Thank you! Best, Derek

Derek Lee When we talk about articulations, Midi is not able to reproduce them. Midi can only do per note without articulations (Midi 2.0 has more to offer, but is not relevant here). The only option I see is to move this aside and only display the notes and instruments as General Midi (GM).
I would be happy to help. So if you have any ideas that we can work out together, please feel free to contact me.
By the way, I can offer to translate the app into German, I have already done this for others (including n-track and various other apps). Just let me know.
Derek Lee
notebynote Thanks for the additional details. Yes, I'm aware that MIDI does not support annotations, and that's one of my concerns about implementing a MIDI export because it won't be able to reproduce the same audio that Beat Note provides. Beat Note uses separate samples for most (not all) articulations, for example: an unaccented snare drum hit, an accented snare drum, snare ghost note, snare flam, and cross-stick.
Some users might not care if articulation data is removed. Some might care. For MIDI we can control the note and velocity. Does this mean the ghost note is the same snare note just with a lower velocity, and the accent is the same snare note with a higher velocity? What should these velocities be? Can the user configure them? Can the user configure what instrument (snare) maps to which MIDI note or does it always map to the MIDI Percussion Key (https://computermusicresource.com/GM.Percussion.KeyMap.html)? If so, how should instruments that Beat Note supports be handled if they don't have a corresponding entry?
I'm not asking you these questions for you to answer them now - I just want to illustrate that the simple request of "export my data to MIDI" is actually quite complex, and most (if not all) of these questions and more are going to need to be researched and answered before I can begin working on a solution for this.
Other tasks have already been prioritized for the short-term, so I cannot commit to a specific date for when this will be completed. This is the benefit of your subscription: my commitment to further improving Beat Note based on your feedback, and allowing you and other users to contribute so we can build Beat Note together. 👍🏻

notebynote Re: translating the app into German - thank you for this offer! While I understand and am grateful for the tremendous support from people in Germany and I also want to improve the app by localizing and creating a more personal experience for my friends in Germany, expanding to international markets is also a very time-consuming process and is planned for the future. I will make a note that you have offered to help and when that time comes I will reach out to you. Thank you for your generous offer! 🙇🏻♂

Adding to this, another option might be exporting to MusicXML and then there's more flexibility. Right now I could take the PDF and pull into something like Sound Slice to then convert, but that's a bit fiddly. When I use tools like Notion or Dorico, I am mostly composing beats to then use in a DAW.
Derek Lee
Chris Ward Thanks for this, Chris! Looks like I forgot to add it, but I have had a couple users request MusicXML support - both for import and for export. I'm keen to learn how many users would find this feature useful. While I expect it would be a considerable amount of work to add support for it, I can also see the benefits for users to move between different applications.

Thanks so much for this feature request Francesco Di Lillo! I had also thought about exporting beats to MIDI and was hoping someone would create a request for it to help me validate the need. 👍🏻 I don't have an electronic drumkit, so if you can provide some more details about this it would be greatly appreciated. When exporting to MIDI, is it correct for me to assume that you would then import it into your eKit? Would you expect certain MIDI notes to be used (for example, General MIDI Percussion e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_MIDI)?
Francesco Di Lillo
Derek Lee: Sure but I’m so NOT very technical! 😂 I have a very entry-level kit, so I use a DAW along with VST3 plugins to improve its sound. I also use it to record when I play along drumless tracks. When I record a cover, I would like to draft the notation of my drums reflecting accurately how I have played it and be able to share it easily across other platforms or with other users. For example, I use MuseScore, which then translates the score into MIDI, a lot but I find writing the sheet music with Beat Note much faster and handier.
A final case use for me would be experimenting composing drum tracks for other styles (techno, electronic, etc.) with Beat Notes. Being able to export the MIDI track into a DAW would allow me to apply different instruments and effects. I hope it helps.
Derek Lee
Francesco Di Lillo: This is really helpful information, thanks for sharing! It sounds like there may be other ways that Beat Note could help assist you with some of these tasks. For example, some users have asked for the ability to change the drum sounds that are used for playback. I'm also interested to learn more about how you would share with other platforms or users, as Beat Note currently does allow the ability to share with other Beat Note users. If I can understand more about how you'd like to share this information, I could potentially improve the sharing experience in Beat Note as well.

Derek Lee that would be perfect!
