Search by time signature
Derek Lee
Hello Marie Collion! It's great to hear from you and welcome to the community! 🎉
I'm glad to hear you are enjoying Beat Note and perceive it's getting more love. I certainly hope that is the case! 😅 Sometimes it's difficult for me to tell to be honest, and receiving feedback from passionate users such as yourself is really helpful for me. Please keep the great feedback coming! 🙇🏻♂️
Searching rhythms/ideas by time signature is an interesting idea! Could you please share some more details with me about how you might use this? Where do you want to search by time signature? What kind of information do you want to see in the search results? Why would you search by time signature?
As much detail as you can share would be great. I'm also open to setting up a time for us to chat 1:1 if you'd be open to it - please let me know by either scheduling a meeting with me from inside the app (under the Settings tab -> Meet 1:1 with Derek) or sending me an email if you can't find any times that work for you (Settings -> Email Derek).
Thank you! 🙏 Best, Derek

Hi Derek Lee ,
I’ll send you an email later this week to explain the feature better 🙂

Sounds great, Marie Collion, thank you!
While I can of course imagine some of the ways in which I might use this myself, I don't want to bias my approach to this without fully understanding how you would specifically like to use this. An email explaining how you would approach this would be greatly appreciated, thank you! 🙇🏻♂

Hi Derek Lee,
Better to reply here actually, so that other users can have a read.
This is the main use case I'd see for this feature: whenever my band starts working on a new song, the guitar and lyrics usually come first. Before playing anything on the drums, I make sure I get the time-signature and tempo right. I'm familiar with the usual 4/4 nd 3/4, anything else is more out of my comfort zone. Our guitarist/singer enjoys odd time-signature. To fire up my imagination and give me some inspiration, I'd like to be able to search, in the "Dowloads" menu (we can already search by beat name), by time-signature like "5/4", "7/4"...
When we create a measure in Beat Note, we already specify the time-signature so I would assume the property is somehow persisted whenever we save a rythm we create for others to download.
Another alternative would be to be able to search by music genre... but we need to trust the drummer to upload the right genre (don't trust me on this).
I hope it is clear!

Marie Collion Thanks for sharing your feedback here! Yes, this is helpful so others can also comment and vote for this feature. Thank you!
I've played with guitarists who also enjoy odd-time signatures, so I can understand how your songwriting process lends itself to this kind of flow. 👍🏻
You mentioned searching in the Downloads menu. I wonder if you are looking for inspiration in the "Discover" tab for beats that are in odd times to find inspiration for how you might be able to play in odd times as well? 🤔 Or do you also want to be able to search your own beats (the "My Beats" tab) for beats you've composed that contain odd-time signatures? Or maybe both?
> When we create a measure in Beat Note, we already specify the time-signature so I would assume the property is somehow persisted whenever we save a rythm we create for others to download.
Yes, you are correct - each measure in BN has a time signature, so it is possible for me to search for this information and then present the results. That said, when searching for something like an odd-time signature, the measure that contains the odd time might not be the first measure. Therefore, I think in order for search results to be more useful to you, the search results might need to show different information than they show now. Besides the beat name, you probably want to see a preview of the measure that matches the time signature you're searching for, and maybe how many measures are in that time signature, etc. What other information would be helpful for you in the search results?
Additionally: Would it be helpful for us to create educational content in the Discover tab on odd time signatures to help you find inspiration? Are there specific odd time signatures that you are looking for inspiration for?

I've wondered about classifying beats with information such as music genre as this is a bit difficult. Some beats are very distinctly in a specific genre, while others could match many genres. There could also could be differences in opinion of what beat(s) fit in which genres. 😅 I'd like to clarify: where is it you want to search by music genre? Is it your own beats? Your downloaded beats? Or the Discover beats?

Derek Lee 👋
Ok, let's forget the search by genre, I don't think it will bring much value anyway! 😅
Being to search by time-signature (I have in mind 5/4 and 7/4 but really time-signature, even 4/4 and 3/4) from the "Discover" tab would be much more relevant than from the "Download" tab. If it's possible to have both, fine.
When it comes to the results returned, ideally, if only one measure fits the search criteria, the whole beat should be returned. If we could have a preview with the measure matching the time-signature (the first one if several) and the name of the beat, great!
You mentioned an educational content in the Discover menu and yep, that would be awesome to have this. I personally use the app to improve my own drumming knowledge.
Bye!

Hi Marie Collion, Zak here. I help produce content for our discover tab. I’ll add this to my list for the coming weeks, covering 5/4 and 7/4. Please keep an eye out this month!
