Snare Drum Stick Shot Articulation
Derek Lee
Benny Amon: Follow-up question for you, as there is not often consensus within the drumming community: what kind of articulation symbol would you expect to see on a snare drum note to decorate it to mean a stick shot in the music notation? 🤔

Hope this helps. there isn’t consensus you are right. But choosing one and going with it would be fine

Benny Amon Thanks for the photo example!
I'm currently using the "x" on the snare to indicate a cross-stick (butt-end of the stick against the rim while the palm is on the drumhead). This does not align with one of the references I like to use "Guide to Standardized Drumset Notation" (image attached; I've never seen it notated this way in my experience...), but I've found it to be more common in other resources. 🤷🏻 So then the question becomes.. how to distinguish between cross-sticks and stick-shots? 🤔
I like to think big, so one future goal I have for Beat Note is to help facilitate consensus/collaboration on a more "standardized" drumset notation for these types of questions. (I'd like to emphasize "facilitate" and "collaborate", specifically not to "define" or "impose.")

Derek Lee Hey Derek. Yes I understand that you are using the x for the cross stick vibe. I think that works fine. Here’s an example of how I’ve seen the stick shot also notated… The one for rimshot has a note with a diagonal line through it. That could work…
